Possibly in an effort to make up for the fact it took thirty minutes for the police to arrive, a caravan of three cruisers pulled up at once—Susan and Campbell, Jackson and Lin, Babcock and Ferguson. During that half hour, Loretta and I had paced beside the garage, neither of us knowing what to do, feeling disrespectful to leave Priscilla’s body but not wanting to stay in the space with her either. Watson plopped down after a few rotations and stared at us as if we’d lost our minds. Kit and Fannie devolved into a screaming match inside their house for the first couple of minutes, in which Kit proclaimed he was going to take off. Their voices quieted after that, and we hadn’t seen or heard anything else from them. I assumed Fannie had talked him out of fleeing.

As she stepped out of her car, Detective Green gave me a glare that communicated her sentiment crystal clear, one she’d issued verbally multiple times over the years—seriously, Winifred? Another dead body? Something is seriously wrong with you.

Not picking up on her serious mood, or not caring, Watson darted her way the second she came into view, hopping just like he did in every interaction with Leo, Ben, and Barry.

Susan halted mid-step at the sight of him and shook her head, baring her teeth. “Oh no, Fleabag. We are not having that type of codependent, uncomfortably awkward relationship.” She snapped her fingers, then pointed at him. “Shape up and show some self-respect.”

Watson cringed and issued a little whimper, looking utterly dejected.

Susan gave a nod. “Better.” She started my way, but before she made it, Watson began bouncing again. As if it was her partner’s fault, she turned to Officer Cabot. “What is it with your species? Why are all males so—” Apparently at a loss for words, she waffled her hand at Watson and shuddered.

The other four officers had neared; Babcock smirked at Campbell.

“Got a comment, Officer Babcock?” Susan turned her snarl his way.

He merely shook his head, his eyes downcast.

Officer Jackson cuffed Campbell on the shoulder in a show of support.

“Actually…” Susan snapped her fingers another time and then pointed to the end of the drive. “Babcock and Ferguson, get back in your cruiser, park it across the end of the driveway, and wait, weapons holstered, but ready. I have no idea how this is going to go.” She swiveled that pointing finger to the next two officers. “Jackson and Lin, go around the house, see if you notice anything unusual. One of you take position at the back door, the other, the front. Wait for me to finish up here.” As the four officers departed to follow orders, Susan turned to Loretta and me, thoroughly ignoring Watson, whose bouncing slowed while his pitiful whimpering increased. “You all wait in Ms. McDaniel’s house while Cabot and I check on our victim and secure the scene.” She didn’t ask for Loretta’s permission or wait for our agreement before heading into the garage to take care of Priscilla.
